When you remove light from the visual system, the brain does not simply go quiet.
In some ways, it may become more active.
This is one of the more interesting ways to begin understanding what happens during a darkness retreat. The brain does not passively register the absence of input. It responds to it. Actively, creatively, and sometimes strangely.
This does not mean we already have a complete science of darkness retreats. We do not.
The direct research on multi-day darkness meditation is still very young. But there is a body of adjacent research that helps us understand some of what may be happening: circadian biology, sensory deprivation, flotation-REST, visual hallucination research, dark therapy for mania, and studies on how expectation and context shape spiritual experience.
The online retreat world is considerably more confident than the research literature.
That gap is worth naming clearly, because the honest version is genuinely interesting enough without the embellishment.

What Happens to the Body and Mind During Darkness Meditation
The most immediate effect of total darkness is on the circadian system.
Light is one of the primary regulators of the human biological clock. The retina contains specialised cells that are not involved in ordinary image-forming vision. These cells detect ambient light and communicate with the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus, which helps regulate sleep timing, hormone release, body temperature, metabolism, alertness, and mood.
A major review on the effects of light on human circadian rhythms, sleep, and mood makes this clear: light is not just something that helps us see. It is one of the main signals by which the body knows what time it is.
When light is removed, that system loses its most important external cue.
The hormone most people associate with darkness is melatonin. The pineal gland secretes melatonin in response to darkness, and this partly explains why many people report deep sleep, vivid dreams, and a strong sense of physiological unwinding during the first phase of a darkness retreat.
But the picture becomes more complicated the longer the darkness continues.
A small study on the physiological effects of ten days of total darkness in humans found something unexpected. Instead of a simple sustained increase in melatonin, participants showed disrupted systemic melatonin patterns, with morning melatonin increasing and nighttime melatonin decreasing, so that the usual day-night rhythm became less distinct over time.
This matters.
Total darkness does not simply mean more melatonin, better sleep, and biological bliss forever. The body's rhythms are more complex than that. Darkness can help the system rest, but prolonged darkness can also disrupt the usual temporal architecture that the body relies on.
So the first honest scientific point is this:
Darkness is powerful because it affects deep biological rhythms. But powerful does not mean automatically beneficial in every dose.
That is why retreat length matters.
Darkness, Sleep, and Time Cues
In ordinary life, time is held in place by many cues: sunrise, sunset, clocks, meals, screens, conversations, obligations, movement through space, and social contact.
A darkness retreat removes many of these at once.
Without visual input and without the usual behavioural cues, time can become strange. Hours feel like minutes. Minutes feel like hours. Sleep can become unusually deep at first, but later it may become fragmented, dreamlike, or difficult to track.
This is not just a psychological curiosity. Circadian rhythms depend on regular timing signals. Light is the strongest one, but social routines, meals, movement, and temperature also play a role. When these cues are reduced, the body may begin to drift.
This is one reason why a darkness retreat is not simply "a good night of sleep, but longer." It is a full alteration of the body's orienting system.
For some people, that produces rest.
For others, it produces disorientation.
For many, it produces both.
What the Visual Cortex Does Without Light
One of the most fascinating questions in darkness retreat is: why do people see things when there is nothing to see?
Lights. Colours. Geometric patterns. Faces. Landscapes. Dreamlike scenes. Sometimes simple visual noise. Sometimes fully formed visionary experiences.
The short answer is that the brain is not a camera.
Vision is not just the passive reception of light. It is an active construction. The brain is constantly interpreting, predicting, organising, and generating perception. When normal visual input is reduced or removed, internally generated activity can become more noticeable.
Research on visual deprivation and hallucination gives us some useful clues. A classic study on enhanced excitability of the human visual cortex after light deprivation found increased visual cortex excitability after a period of light deprivation. Research on Charles Bonnet syndrome also shows that when visual input is reduced through sight loss or sensory deprivation, people can experience visual hallucinations, sometimes simple, sometimes complex.
This does not mean darkness retreat visions are "just hallucinations" in a dismissive sense.
It means that the visual system is capable of generating experience from within when ordinary input is absent. The visual cortex, deprived of its usual job, may begin working with memory, imagination, expectation, emotion, and spontaneous neural activity.
This is almost certainly part of what produces the visual phenomena that practitioners consistently report during darkness retreats.
It is also relevant to darkness meditation specifically. The instruction in many contemplative traditions to simply observe whatever appears, without grasping or rejecting, is not arbitrary. It is a direct engagement with the mind's own generative activity.
For the contemplative framework that surrounds the science, the practice of darkness meditation covers the Tibetan and Taoist lineages that formalised dark retreat practice long before the research began.
What you are watching, when you watch the lights in the darkness, may be your own mind becoming visible.
Not metaphorically only.
Neurologically, too.
Sensory Reduction and the Nervous System
The broader research on sensory reduction is more developed than the research on darkness retreats specifically.
Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy, known as REST, is most commonly studied through flotation tanks. A 2025 systematic review of flotation-REST found evidence suggesting that REST can reduce anxiety, chronic pain, and sleep issues, while supporting relaxation, wellbeing, and some aspects of creativity and cognitive function.
A more recent scoping review of flotation-REST also suggests that flotation-REST may be safe, well-tolerated, and potentially useful as a non-pharmacological approach for chronic pain, though the field still needs stronger and more standardised research.
The proposed mechanisms include reduced sensory load, shifts toward parasympathetic activity, decreased stress response, and a quieter relationship with bodily sensation and internal experience.
Darkness retreat is not the same as flotation-REST.
It is usually longer, more psychologically demanding, and embedded in a contemplative or spiritual context. In a float tank, a session might last an hour. In a darkness retreat, the experience may last three, five, seven, or ten nights. That difference matters.
But the general principle is relevant: reducing sensory demand can change the nervous system.
In darkness, the nervous system is no longer constantly organising itself around visual input. There is no screen, no horizon, no face, no mirror, no room to scan, no social expression to interpret, no external image to orient around.
For some people, that reduction is profoundly restful.
For others, it reveals just how dependent the system has become on constant input.
This is why the first day of a darkness retreat is often not mystical at all. It is withdrawal. From stimulation, from orientation, from momentum, from the subtle addiction to the next thing.
Then, slowly, something deeper may begin.
Sensory Deprivation and Unusual Perception
Sensory deprivation has a complicated history.
In harmful contexts, deprivation has been used as torture or coercion. In therapeutic contexts, carefully designed sensory reduction has been used for relaxation, pain reduction, and anxiety relief. In contemplative contexts, darkness and solitude have been used for spiritual practice.
The context matters enormously.
Still, across contexts, one thing is clear: when sensory input is reduced, unusual perceptions may arise.
A 2015 study on psychotic-like experiences during sensory deprivation found that brief sensory deprivation increased psychotic-like experiences in participants. Importantly, hallucination-proneness was the strongest predictor of the increase, with state anxiety also playing a role.
Another study on psychotic-like experiences and cognitive appraisal after brief sensory deprivation found that people's interpretation of these experiences mattered. In other words, what happens is one thing. What the person believes is happening is another.
This matters deeply for darkness retreat.
The same internal light, sound, fear, image, or felt presence could be interpreted as purification, trauma, spiritual contact, madness, nervous system discharge, divine vision, or meaningless mental noise depending on the person's background, expectations, and guidance.
This is not a small point.
A darkness retreat does not simply produce experiences. It produces experiences inside a meaning-making system. That system includes the participant's psychology, spiritual background, expectations, fears, beliefs, previous drug or retreat experiences, and the framing offered by the facilitators.
This is one reason why honesty matters so much in how darkness retreats are presented.
If people are told that every light is DMT, every fear is ego death, and every destabilising experience is spiritual awakening, you have not created a retreat container. You have created a metaphysical funhouse with poor safeguarding.
The darkness is already strong enough.
It does not need hype.
The Default Mode Network and Introspection
One area of neuroscience that offers a useful, though still tentative, frame for understanding darkness meditation is the default mode network.
The default mode network, or DMN, is a set of brain regions often associated with self-referential thinking, autobiographical memory, imagining the future, daydreaming, and forms of introspection. It tends to become more active when attention is not absorbed in external tasks.
A darkness retreat removes many of the external tasks and stimuli that ordinarily structure attention. No phone. No conversation. No visual scene. No work. No social role to perform. No stream of new images to process.
This may allow more uninterrupted self-referential and introspective processing. Memories surface. Imagined conversations appear. Old emotional material returns. Future fantasies play out. Unfinished life situations become suddenly vivid.
This is one scientific frame for what practitioners describe when they say the retreat starts to "go deeper" after the first day or two.
But this should be said carefully.
We cannot simply point to the default mode network and say, "That is the darkness retreat." The DMN is not a tidy little spiritual drawer inside the brain. It is one part of a far more complex system.
Still, it offers a useful bridge.
When external input decreases, internal material often becomes more prominent.
Anyone who has sat a long silent retreat knows this already. Darkness intensifies it.
This is not always relaxing.
It is often honest.
The DMT Question
It would be dishonest to write about the science of darkness retreats without addressing the endogenous DMT claim directly.
The popular idea is that extended darkness causes the pineal gland to release significant amounts of dimethyltryptamine, producing the visionary experiences that practitioners report. This is widely repeated in darkness retreat marketing.
It is not established science.
DMT has been found in trace amounts in human tissues, and there is genuine scientific interest in its possible role in unusual states of consciousness. But whether the pineal gland produces it in meaningful quantities, and whether darkness triggers such production, remains speculative.
Researcher David Luke, who has written extensively on psychedelics and unusual experiences, has described the darkness-DMT claim as unproven and controversial. WIRED's 2025 report on days-long dark retreats also notes the uncertainty around negative outcomes, unusual perception, and the lack of solid naturalistic research on extended dark-room retreats.
People do have genuine visionary experiences in darkness.
Those experiences are real.
What causes them is not yet established.
Saying "it is DMT" is reaching well past what the evidence currently supports. It might be DMT in some cases. It might be visual cortex excitability. It might be dream imagery intruding into waking consciousness. It might be memory, expectation, anxiety, spiritual practice, sensory deprivation, circadian disruption, or some combination of all of these.
We do not need to reduce the mystery to a molecule in order to respect it.
Actually, doing so often makes the mystery smaller.
Dark Therapy and Bipolar Mania
One of the more interesting areas of related research is clinical dark therapy.
This is not the same as a darkness retreat.
In clinical settings, dark therapy has been studied as a way of stabilising circadian rhythm and reducing manic symptoms, especially in bipolar disorder. A small pilot study on dark therapy for bipolar mania exposed bipolar inpatients with mania to 14 hours of enforced darkness nightly for three consecutive days.
Later research on blue-blocking glasses as an additive treatment for mania explored "virtual darkness" by blocking blue light in a hospital setting. The idea is that blue light strongly affects circadian signalling, so blocking it in the evening and night may help stabilise rhythms without needing complete darkness.
This research is fascinating because it shows how powerful light and darkness can be for the mood system.
But it should not be misread.
It does not mean that people in unstable psychological states should go into multi-day darkness retreats. Quite the opposite. It suggests that when mood, sleep, and reality-testing are fragile, light and darkness should be handled with structure, care, and proper clinical support.
A darkness retreat is not a treatment for mania.
It is not a treatment for psychosis.
It is not a psychiatric intervention.
For people who are stable, prepared, and properly held, darkness may support insight, rest, and contemplative depth. For people who are unstable, it may amplify instability.
That distinction is not optional.
It is basic responsibility.
Expectation, Authority, and Spiritual Experience
One of the most important pieces of recent research for darkness retreats may not be about melatonin or the visual cortex at all.
It is about meaning.
A 2025 qualitative study on dark therapy, authority, and spiritual experience looked at dark therapy as an alternative-spiritual practice involving prolonged visual and social deprivation combined with guidance from an authority figure. The study found that days alone in complete darkness can produce psychologically challenging experiences and unusual perceptual phenomena. It also found that expectations, beliefs, previous cultural learning, and the perceived authority of guides help shape how participants interpret what happens.
This is huge.
Because in darkness, people do not only meet sensations.
They meet interpretations.
A person may see light and think: this is my brain adjusting.
Another may think: this is divine presence.
Another may think: I am losing my mind.
Another may think: this is DMT.
Another may think: this is the subtle body opening.
The experience may be similar. The meaning can be completely different.
This is why the framing offered by a retreat centre matters so much. Facilitators should neither reduce everything to brain chemistry nor inflate everything into cosmic revelation. Both moves can be forms of avoidance.
The mature position is more difficult and more honest:
Something real may be happening.
We may not fully know what it is.
Let us meet it carefully.
And at the end of the day, who really cares if it was DMT or a projection of the presence of Krishna, if your actual day to day life doesn't transform, then, practically speaking, it was nothing. However, if your life genuinely does transform and you become a more present, happier person with more trust in yourself and your life, it's that that matters, not the explanation you give to it.
What the Science Cannot Explain
The honest limit of the current research is not a reason to dismiss the practice. It is a reason to be accurate about what you are entering.
One preliminary 2024 study on darkness retreats and mindfulness reported increased mindfulness scores after retreat, sustained at one-month follow-up. That is interesting. It suggests that darkness retreat may support measurable changes in mindfulness. But it is still early evidence, not a definitive conclusion.
The 2025 qualitative study on dark therapy and spiritual experience also points toward something real, but not easily simplified. Darkness can produce challenging experiences, perceptual shifts, and spiritual interpretations. How those are held and integrated matters.
Together, these studies tell us something important:
Darkness retreats are worthy of serious research.
They do not yet justify exaggerated claims.
The framework of mindfulness scores and qualitative phenomenology captures some of what happens. It does not capture everything. It does not fully capture the encounter with fear, the strange intimacy of total darkness, the collapse of ordinary time, the return of buried emotional material, or the moments when awareness seems to recognise itself without the usual visual world holding identity in place.
Practitioners who come out of extended darkness meditation describing something that feels like genuine contact with the ground of their own awareness are not necessarily deluded.
The science is simply not yet equipped to say very much about that part.
That is not a failure of the practice.
It is a description of where the frontier currently sits.
So What Is Actually Happening?
The most honest answer is layered.
Biologically, darkness affects circadian rhythm, melatonin, sleep, mood, and the body's orienting systems.
Neurologically, the reduction of visual input may increase the prominence of internally generated imagery and alter the behaviour of the visual system.
Psychologically, sensory reduction can bring forward memory, fear, emotion, fantasy, longing, and unresolved material.
Spiritually, darkness removes many of the usual supports of identity and invites direct contact with awareness, projection, and the unknown.
Relationally, the absence of others reveals how much of the self is usually organised around being seen.
Symbolically, darkness has always carried power: womb, cave, death, night, mystery, initiation, descent, source.
A good scientific frame does not cancel these meanings.
It gives us another way to respect the potency of the practice.
Darkness is not just an empty room.
It is an amplifier.
It amplifies rest, projection, fear, longing, imagination, unfinished emotion, spiritual expectation, and sometimes genuine insight.
That is why preparation matters.
That is why screening matters.
That is why retreat length matters.
And that is why we should speak about this practice with both wonder and restraint.
Wonder without restraint becomes fantasy.
Restraint without wonder becomes spiritual anaesthesia.
We need both.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is darkness meditation the same as sensory deprivation?
Related, but not identical.
Sensory deprivation, as studied in laboratory settings and flotation tanks, usually involves short sessions and controlled conditions. Darkness meditation in a retreat context involves extended periods, days rather than hours, in total darkness with a specific contemplative orientation.
The physiological mechanisms overlap. The depth and context of the experience are considerably different.
Is a darkness retreat safe?
For most people who are psychologically stable and reasonably prepared, yes.
For people dealing with mania, active psychosis, recent psychiatric hospitalisation, severe panic instability, active suicidality, or a fragile relationship with reality, it is not appropriate.
Extended sensory reduction amplifies whatever is already present in the system. This is part of its power and part of its risk. We screen everyone who applies and speak personally with each participant before accepting a booking.

Does darkness retreat release DMT?
We do not know.
People do report visionary experiences in darkness, and those experiences can be vivid, meaningful, and perceptually real. But the claim that extended darkness reliably causes a major endogenous DMT release is not established science.
It is better to say: darkness can produce unusual perceptual and visionary experiences. The mechanisms are still being studied.
Why do people see lights in total darkness?
There are several possible explanations. Reduced visual input may increase the prominence of internally generated imagery. The visual cortex may become more excitable after light deprivation. Sleep pressure, dream imagery, expectation, memory, and emotional material may also contribute.
In contemplative terms, the important thing is not to immediately explain, inflate, or suppress what appears.
The practice is to observe.
How long should a first darkness retreat be?
For most people, three nights is the best first step.
It is long enough to move beyond the initial restlessness and begin to taste the depth of the practice. It is short enough that most people can stay genuinely present rather than simply endure.

That is not a problem.
The most interesting things tend to arrive before the instruments designed to measure them.
A darkness retreat touches biology, perception, psychology, symbolism, and spiritual practice all at once. It can rest the nervous system. It can disturb the nervous system. It can reveal fear. It can reveal beauty. It can produce strange perceptions. It can clarify what matters.
The honest position is not cynicism.
And it is not hype.
It is respect.
Darkness is powerful.
